Reading for Nov 21

Hi everyone,

Next week we will be talking about how string theory unifies together gravity and quantum mechanics.

I am assigning two chapters of Greene for this week’s reading assignment because I think he actually does a really nice job of explaining the relevant physics.

• Greene, Chapter 5 (all of it);
• Greene, Chapter 6, especially pp142-146 and pp152-164

I am still working on writing my lecture notes for next week (as well as rewriting my lost lecture notes for today); I plan to post them on the weekend. You should be well prepared even if I don’t manage to post my notes before the day of class, as long as you read Greene as above.
